New Zealand, one trip at a time
New Zealand is home to snow-capped mountains, sweeping beaches, ancient volcanic landscapes, native forests, glassy lakes and fiords.
This is my ongoing project to explore and photograph this country, one trip at a time.
Every image you see here is a real photograph from a real place I’ve travelled to. No AI, no stock photography, no studio setups. Just me, my camera, a lot of early mornings and hopefully enough insect repellent and sunscreen.
How it all started
About 28 years ago, I picked up a little film camera at a garage sale for around twenty dollars. I had no idea at the time where it would lead me. I just knew I loved photography and wanted to learn everything I could about it.
I’m completely self-taught, so from there I just kept experimenting, learning, making mistakes and pushing myself a little further.
Over time, photography became something much bigger than a hobby. It gave me something to get up early for, something worth staying out late for and a reason to keep exploring places I might never otherwise have seen.
Somewhere along the way, it got into my blood.
What I photograph
I photograph New Zealand landscapes, wildlife and the moments in nature that make me stop and take notice.
I love big landscapes, but it’s usually the light that pulls me in first. The way it moves across a mountain, breaks through cloud, catches the edge of a ridge or completely changes the mood of a place.
I’m drawn to wild places, changing weather and those fleeting moments when everything comes together for just a few seconds. But just as important as what a place looks like is how it feels to be
there. That’s the part I’m always trying to bring home in a photograph.
I want my images to make you stop for a moment. To feel drawn in, maybe even a little haunted by them, and want to come back for another look.
From photograph to finished piece
The way my photographs are printed matters to me just as much as the image itself.
My fine art prints are produced on beautiful matte photo rag paper chosen for its detail, depth and lack of distracting sheen. It gives the image a softness while still holding onto all the tiny details that made me want to photograph the scene in the first place.
My canvases are printed on a fine, smooth,
high-quality canvas that preserves the detail and depth of the original photograph.
I’m particular about the materials and printing process because I want the finished piece to feel as considered as the photograph itself.
